Death Requisite
Revisitation
Released: 2016-11-25
I had never heard of this band. It is only through recommendation that is on my radar. I was surprised to find out that they have been around for over 20 years!
I see the band considers themselves to be extreme hybrid metal, which I have to say seems like it describes what I look for. I like music that has a blend of different genres more than music that is solidly one genre.
Apparently, the name of this band, Death Requisite, was taken from a quote by Stanislaw Lec, a post-war writer, who said "The first requisite for immortality is death". It feels like one of those quotes that states the obvious. I like satire.
The title of the album, Revisitation, makes you think it must contain something of importance, as it is worth a return to it. The first visit wasn't enough. I know if I return to something, it's because I feel like there is more to get from it or details I didn't give enough attention to.
Album Artwork
I feel like the way there are floating pieces of land in this artwork reminds me of artwork that other artists have done. And seeing the band with their instruments makes me think of a mediocre music video. (I often find the staged ones with bands playing to be kind of painful to watch) The front makes me think of an old game called Myst. I think this artwork isn't the best part of this album.
Mood
Overall, I feel like a tiny little character moving through a vast world that's something bigger than myself, like you would in a video game. The beauty here brings to mind a large landscape with large mountains, tall skies and endless places to go.
Vocals
Let me start by saying I am glad there are no singing vocals. For one. I am picky about singing vocals, but for two because the music really doesn't need it. The vocal is the deeper kind, but has a passion to it, and doesn't sound empty. It has fast-paced parts and more drawn out. I really like it.
Music
Of course the death metal or deathcore aspects of this music are a draw for me, tremolo picking and memorable riffs. The solos are often slowed-paced, which feels a little unexpected. Symphonic elements are a welcome way to make it sound different and give it a dramatic flair. It reminds me of something you would hear in power metal, meshed into death metal at times. Other times it's like a movie score mixed with metal. There is even some video game moments, such as heard in the second track.
I am someone who cares about pace, and I find this album does a good job of mixing the pace up within a song, and certainly within the album. This keeps me interested. The last song is an instrumental song. It's the kind of song that I would either be able to relax into or skip if I am in a hurry. I appreciate that they created this kind of song. It speaks to the bigger vision, not just grinding out something predictable.
Lyrics
I usually try to listen to an album and get a feel for it before I check out the lyrics in detail. In this case, I have to say I was very surprised to see the lyrics were so focused on worship. The reality is that some Christian metal is really cheesy or even crosses a line into becoming pretentious, even if you believe there is a God. Maybe I just feel like that? I found a disconnect at first in the content of the lyrics and the sound of the music. I don't listen to heavy music in a worship stance, normally. Once I knew the lyrics, I wanted to reject it because they aren't what I am used to, but I still liked it.
Revisitation
I think this is talking about the rapture and the belief that those who believe will rise and will worship God. I never would have connected the word revisitation with the rapture, but I think that is how it is being used.
At the gathering of souls,
The bells of Heaven strike will their tolls
The dead in Christ shall arise
To praise You LORD
When all the angels sing
The souls of earth will bring
An eternal message of light
To praise you LORD!
Vivens Sanctuarium
The English meaning for this title is living sanctuary. I think this is talking about living out characteristics associated with Christianity, so it's like your body is the sanctuary, so you treat it respectfully and are careful what you do with it.
The LORD’s amassed an army to be a Living Sanctuary,
Through His breath in us, the army of Holy Light!
In time Your Light, will shine throughout the Earth,
Until then the praises of the purified shall rise up unto the gates of Heaven!
Veneration
As the title indicates, this is talking about having a high regard for God and what he has created, which would be a common part of worship.
From the first breath given to man
Our existence praises Your eternal power
In everything, You are there
And Your glory is seen
Nova Creatione
Translated to New Creation. This is talking about making changes for the good to the point of not being recognizable, a new creation.
From the darkness of Earth, comes a desperate cry
From a broken soul, to the Father above:
“Take this life, this goalless waste,
Make it new, make it all for you!
Father! Father!”
Redemptio per Deicide
Translated redemption through the killing of God. This is an illustration of what Christianity hinges on, the death and resurrection of God.
As the blood of the Savior touches the Earth
Legions of demons lie in wait
As the darkness covers the sky
The Son of God commits His Spirit
Angels of both darkness and light
Waging war all through the night
Fulfilled by man, the Messiah condemned
He is the Son, God’s pure plan!
Castigation
The word castigation refers to severe punishment. The song seems to be talking about an ultimate need to repent because otherwise you will be punished by God, in the end.
I must say I love the idea of repentance. Turning the opposite direction, completely from what you were doing. How many times have I needed to do this in my own life?
The Lord shall come as a thief in the night
No man will no the hour
When humanity believes in peace and safety
Sudden destruction comes and they’ll pay with their lives!
REPENT! (4X)
Recapitulation
Translated to a restatement.
Instrumental
Playlist Pick
Honestly, I enjoyed this album. It has made me curious about their other albums.
Veneration will make it to my playlist. I like the dynamics in this song. The changes in pace create some interest and drama.
Redemptio per Deicide will also make it to my playlist. I like the death metal, and keyboard play here. Apparently this song was on a demo that preceded this release and had a change of name.
